Reports from Working Groups

1. CDC

  • CMU group is studying sources of noise in the preamp electronics. So far they are making progress on understanding the sources. Jlab is shipping updated cards to CMU within a week for them to test.
  • CMU has shipped an example of the coupling from the chamber to the electronics outside the gas volume to Jlab. Jlab is still trying to figure out how they are supposed to work.
  • CMU group is working on the time-distance conversion function and implementing it in software.

2. BCAL

  • Blake is finishing up the test beam analysis.
  • They are testing adjustments of the lead-fiber ratio in MC
  • They are studying the effects of a pre-radiator in MC.
  • Andrei has identified the best SiPM array he is getting set up to couple it to the test module and use it to look at cosmic rays.
2a. SiPM work by Jlab detector group
  • Carl attended IEEE meeting last week and presented his work on silicon photomultiplier tests.
  • Technology seems to be advancing at a good pace.
  • Sensl seems to be leading the effort for large-area devices.
  • Hamamatsu now has produced a 3mm x 3mm device.
  • a 1mm X 1mm SiPMT with tranches will come from Sensl

4. Solenoid magnet

  • Plans for the stand and for the cryogenic connections to the outside have been passed to the civil design group.
  • Work at IUCF continues to fix the leak in coil 3.
  • Elton has posted a new note with plots of the magnetic field in the regions where phototubes may be placed.
  • Current map is calculated using TOSCA. Next they want to get the full mechanical model into ANSYS and get a more detailed map using that tool.

5. FDC

  • The team is gearing up for the tracking review in December.
  • One important question they want to address is what we gain from having cathode strip readout.
  • Cost estimate for winding the chambers at Fermilab has jumped very high. Discussions are underway with IUCF to do the winding for the prototype there instead. They have given the plans to IUCF and are waiting to see if they can do it, and what their charges would be.
  • Working plans and schedules are being discussed this week to make sure that the manpower is in place in the group at Jlab to meet the project milestones.
  • The Jlab group is working on construction details.
  • A test of the current FDC prototype has been conducted inside a magnetic field at Jefferson Lab. The tests were completed on Monday. The details of the tests were not discussed.
  • Now that the magnetic field tests are over, Simon is putting the prototype chamber back together in the test lab.
  • Simon continues working on the track finding algorithm in the FDC.
  • Simon is also working on the analysis of the tests of the FDC prototype in the magnetic field. Goal is to report on these results by the end of November.

6. TOF

  • The number 90ps is the time resolution per plane that the IU group believes that they can achieve with counters of this geometry.
  • This number corresponds to 70ps - 65ps for the combination of both planes.
  • The question is being studied how the trigger will be able to deal with the high rates on the inner paddles. It was suggested that some of the inner counters may need to be excluded from the trigger in order to make it work.

7. FCAL

  • The IU group is doing tests of the new light guide design. They expect to be able to report results from these tests next week.
  • They have a stand-alone Monte Carlo that they are using to study the detailed response of the counters, including the new light guides. It will be used to guide the questions being addressed in the upcoming FCal beam tests.
  • A cosmic ray stand is being set up to study a lead glass block using cosmics.
  • The investigation of radiation damage hardened lead glass is on-going.
  • The IU group is getting set up to study magnetic field penetration into the soft iron wall that is planned to hold the phototubes.

8. Beam and Tagger

  • Diamond assessment at the CHESS synchrotron was carried out at Cornell this week. A bunch of new diamonds from the Glasgow collection were examined. We are hoping that a couple of these will be good enough to be worth thinning for further study.
  • Microscope prototyping development is concentrating on how to glue fibers to light guides. Progress is being reported regularly on the Connecticut wiki site.

9. Electronics and trigger

  • Work continues on the energy sum module and the clock distribution module.
  • Work continues on the trigger communication network.

Detector Summaries

Curtis also reminded people to update the relevant sections in GlueX-doc 866 and send them to Elton.

MOUs

Curtis recommends that group leaders look at the Fermilab MOU as a starting point for their own. Groups are asked to have a draft of the MOU for their institution ready for discussion by next week.
