Items for followup from previous meeting

Tentative Agenda

  • Phone conference 1:00 pm
  • Close loop on latest round of e-mail exchanges
  • Get updates on billing and project status.

Minutes

Participants in call: Brad Smith, Alexey Radovinsky, Elton Smith, Joe Minervini Eugene Chudakov (joined late)

  1. Brad: Goal for today is to close the loop on the recent round of e-mails, i.e. billing and project status.
  2. Billing was discussed and Joe stated that the project would keep within its allocated budget.
  3. Elton: We should adopt MIT's proposal to select the Rutherford Cable in copper channel as the choice for continued conceptual design of the solenoid.
    • This selects the thermal siphon for the design, which will determine flow rates and pressure drops in the system. Johnathan and Gani can then check that the refrigerator can deliver what is required.
    • Brad: The conceptual design assumes a nominal operation temperature of 4.555 K, which is the saturation temperature of the Jlab refrigerator helium dewar at 5.1 psig pressure.
  4. Field configurations (Alexey)
    • Proposal is to switch location of first and second iron yokes to allow the (single) chimney from the coil to come out upstream. This should be checked by Jlab engineering staff.
    • Addition of additional steel (7" thick cladding and extending the downstream yoke 4" beyond the existing iron) as suggested in GlueX-110706 is suggested to reduce the fringe field, but does not affect the coil design and can be considered by JLab independently of the design of the replacement coil.
  5. Completing previous items
    • Alexey: Answers to George's questions to GlueX-doc-110706 (July 6) in e-mail on July 7, can be found in recent documents.
  6. Action Items:
  7. Question for Paul Brindza (or Lionel): Is there any data on the SSC cable on the critical current at low fields (esp. below 5 T). Or lacking that, any data on magnetization at low field.
  8. Request to Alexey: To be able to simulate the new magnet, can you send us the current distribution in the proposed coil?
  9. Schedule for contract completion:
    • The Conceptual Design Report (deliverable #2) would be completed by Sep 23.
    • The Preliminary Project Schedule and Cost (deliverable #) would follow shortly thereafter.
    • The reports would be presented orally upon completing the written reports. Likely a time would be scheduled for a meeting at JLab in late Sep or early October.
