Minutes

Attendees: David, Elton, Yi, Beni (JLab), Andrei, Giovanni, Zisis (Regina)

  1. Announcements: none
  2. Action Items: see today's presentation by Andrei and subsequent discussion reflected in the minutes.
  3. Updates: Z-Position of the Shower in the Readout Layers of BCAL (Andrei & Irina)
    • Simulations where shown using FLUKA to proceed on the cluster handling for the "curvature effect" (Action Item 4 above). The plots shown contain only "truth" values from the MC. Detector resolution is not accounted. 50k events were run for each energy and angle. On slide 2 right plot, the gaps between the four blobs are artificial, coming from how the centroids are assigned in Irina's MC. The inner layer shows a deviation off the photon trajectory towards larger z values, the outer layers show the opposite. The RMS plots show the spread of the fits. All fits were Gaussian and well behaved, e.g they did not have long tails or show any other aberrations. The probability of events entering the outer layers is good at large angles and plummets to less than 1000 events for forward angles (20 deg).
    • Andrei asks a) whether he should smooth the spectra before providing them to David and b) whether he should fill 2D histos.
    • After discussion it was decided to proceed as follows:
      1. Use this information on the photon curvature to close the KLOE-IU gap. See if when this information -- particularly for the outer layers -- is used correctly whether the number of clusters improves (say for a single photon, that most of the events are consistent with one cluster reconstructed).
      2. Add detector resolution to the above simulations.
      3. Start thinking of variables for a BDT analysis: BDT will provide a ranking of the variables based on their usefulness. Understand the feedback from cluster info->BDT->good cluster selection. Account for the full energy of the shower, as the BDT does not help there. This mat require a two-step process where the outer layers are ignored in the first pass through BDT and their energy is collected in the second step.
  4. Other business:
    1. Communications: Regina is using ReadyTalk while a solution is being sought to replace our dead Polycom. Zisis had trouble projecting the Regina video - it did so for a few seconds, before ReadyTalk shut it down. David tried to promote Zisis to a "Presenter". This took 3-5 minutes of loading Java tools to Zisis' machine. David though the system hung and restarted it, cutting Regina off. We'll try this again next time.
    2. Software Review: This is planned for Nov 24. David will present the progress in the BCAL reconstruction, among other things. He will solicit info from Will, Andrei and Irina.
    3. Next Online data challenge: Elliot is planning to read data from crate all the way to tape silo. The current BCAL histos are not realistic. It does not appear urgent to update these and perhaps it is more efficient to do so after the BCAL Calibration procedure gets underway -- the first ideas on this will be presented during the Nov 5 CALWG meeting.
    4. Next Offline data challenge: Curtis is planning something for December.
