During the summer shutdown we will be performing tests of the small-scale prototype in a magnetic field using the old pair spectrometer magnet in the Hall-B downstream alcove. The idea is to measure the resolution and the deflection of the avalanche position (using external tracking chambers to tell us where the muons actually passed through the prototype) as a function of the magnetic field up to 1.4 T.

The status is as follows:

  1. Electronic racks have been installed in Hall-B downstream alcove
  2. Safety documentation under preparation, first draft to Bert Manzlak
  3. Daniel arranged to borrow 8 small wire chambers from IU, expect them soon (later this week?)
    1. need to check for shorts, flush with nitrogen, and recondition
  4. Gas bottles have been ordered
  5. Test lab setup has been dismantled, ready to recable in Hall-B later this week/early next week
  6. I have obtained another F1 TDC from Fernando
  7. May need to design supports for scintillators, external drift chambers. Plan will come into focus after making some measurements in the alcove.
  8. Initial replumbing/magnet checkout will take place early August..?
  9. Expect to spend one week to calibrate and align the external chambers
  10. Main program: 0T, 0.5 T, 1.0 T, 1.4 T (5 days each)
  11. Supplemental program: vary the gas mixture (amount of deflection is sensitive to Argon/CO2 ratio)
