Minutes

Attending: Elton, Mark, Colin, Lei (JLab); Will (CMU); Sean (FSU); Tegan, Zisis, Ahmed (UofR); Rupesh, Tolga (FIU)

  1. Announcements
    • Accelerator will be down till about Mar 26. Opportunity to take cosmic data.
    • Lei joins the group with two students that will start working on neutron/photon separation in BCAL. Welcome!
  2. Action Items
    • Timing in BCAL MC put on hold to focus on rate dependencies in analysis
    • For the eta analysis in the FCAL, trees of pi+pi-gg need to be created without fit to eta. This needs to be checked.
  3. FCAL Update
    1. Run related
      • logbook entry now with good plots (Colin)
      • Pedestals have been investigated vs run number.
      • Average of all channels for each run vs run number is ~99.6 and has a small systematics as a function of run number of order of 0.1 counts.
      • Most are very constant. However, some show averages ~ 98. We need to keep track of these more closely during running so that hardware thresholds are uniform.
      • Sean: Are they entered into CCDB? Not yet.
  4. BCAL update
    1. Run related
      • Plan to take cosmic data while beam is down. Use self-trigger.
    2. Other
      • Lei and his two students joined the meeting. Rupesh and Tolga will be working toward separating neutrons from photons in the BCAL. They have been reading the BCAL NIM article as well as looking at the slides prepared by Andrei on his studies.
  5. Calibrations
    1. Low Level BCAL Calibrations (Mark)
      • Completed all run dependent calibrations. Checked overall timing, which looks good with a few run exceptions. They will be checked.
      • Next steps include the attenuation lengths, gain ratios. These rely on tracking, so they might need redoing after tracking updates.
    2. some pi0 calibration plots (Tegan)
      • Using Will's code to iterate on gains by minimizing pi0 widths
      • Testing procedure at this point with 2018 data, Runs 40660-40690.
      • Process converging, although not achieving the narrow widths seen in previous periods.
      • Will: Gain calibrations do depend on the lower level calibrations.
      • Mark: Expand run range, now that it seems that we may not get much more data this period
      • Sean: Might want to have a first stab at lambdas, gain ratios for a basis for gain matching
      • Sean: Iterations are taking long, so one may wish to investigate other options besides the JLab farm. Possibilities include IU or OSG.
      • Zisis: They have access to "Compute Canada" (specifically the Westgrid), but infrastructure is not ready. Once the interfaces with the OSG are fixed, access will be facilitated. But the time scale may be ~month(s).
    3. Calibration with muons
      • This procedure was used as a seed for the initial BCAL gain calibrations and also used for the gains in layer 4.
      • Andrei and Irina are returning to Russia at the end of the month (Mar 27) so there is an effort to make sure their effort does not get lost
      • There are three phases to the calibration with muons: a) event generation (FORTRAN program written by Andrei), b) event simulation with fine-grained MC c) analysis and determination of gains for data.
      • The MC event generation was run on the JLab computers, so all code is already at the lab. Push to github?
      • Colleen will be working Zisis to take over this project this summer. Zisis is making an effort to safeguard the code and understand how it runs. Plans to write a note to explain the procedure and then a "how to" to explain use.
    4. FCAL time calibrations
      • Mark asked the status of the FCAL time calibrations. Colin: Jared has put his radiation studies on hold and will focus on timing calibration.
      • Sean: What is the strategy? Revive old code or write new? Colin: The thought is to have a single code to do channel-to-channel timing changes, without separating out the crate-level shifts.
      • Mark: For the BCAL, the crate-level 4ns shifts needed to be completed run-by-run, the channel-to-channel timing could be done for the entire period. He offered to help with the effort. it is also possible that LED pulser for the FCAL that pulses all channels at once could be used to determine the crate-to-crate offsets. Colin, Mat and Mark will discuss the project offline.
  6. Reconstruction and Simulation
  7. NIM articles
    • Updates to submission. Note that deadline for resubmission is Mar 31.
  8. Any other business
