Introduction

The May 2008 Hall D Subsystem Review will cover all aspects of Hall D that have not been reviewed previously under the auspices of the 12 GeV project office. This includes electronics, trigger, DAQ, event and hardware monitoring, experiment and hardware controls, and detector integration, assembly, and maintainability. Milestones for the electronics/trigger/DAQ/monitoring/controls part of the review can be found in Online Major Milestones.

Current planning is for a 1 1/2 day meeting the week of 7-May, with no parallel sessions. This will be a combined Hall D and Hall B review.

Charge for the Review Committee

Draft charge for the committee (see here for the latest):

The scope of this review includes the Hall D electronics and data acquisition systems, the mechanical assembly and installation of the various Hall D detector elements, and the general infrastructure for this new experimental Hall.

For the Hall D System and Infrastructure Design and Safety Review, you are asked to address the following questions:

  1. Are the technical performance requirements adequately defined for the systems under review? Are the plans for achieving technical performance and subsequent construction and testing sufficiently developed and documented for the present phase of the project?
  2. Are the plans to address recommendations of the recent Hall D detector system reviews sound and appropriately developed for this stage of the project?
  3. Are the current designs and plans likely to achieve the performance requirements with a low risk of cost increases, schedule delays, and technical problems?
  4. Are the element fabrication and assembly plans consistent with the overall project and Hall D schedule? Are the plans for the detector integration in the GlueX spectrometer and the associated Hall D infrastructure appropriately developed for the present phase of the project?
  5. Have ES&H considerations been adequately incorporated into the designs at their present stage?

Please address the above questions point-by-point. Note that several aspects of the Hall D detector, electronics, and data acquisition systems have been reviewed previously. Recent 2008 reviews include a February Hall D Forward Drift Chamber mini-review, a February Hall D calorimetry review, and a March Hall D Drift Chambers and associated Particle Identification systems review. You will be supplied with the reports from these earlier reviews along with additional pre-briefing materials.
