Meeting General Agenda

September 22, 2015

Present: E. Chudakov, A. Deur, C. Meyer, M. Shepherd, E. Smith.

There will be five weeks of beam operations, out of which there will be at least one week of beam restoration (probably more) starting on Nov. 9th. From discussion with Arne F., it is unlikely that we will get beam before Thanksgiving. In addition, we will have the Hall open during the day for 2 weeks or more for the magnet according to Ben Z. At least one week will overlap with the beam restoration. According to that, we would have at most 4 weeks of possible beam with 12 GeV priority including 1 week or more with beam only during owl and night shifts, if the accelerator agrees (Hall availability to the 12 GeV has priority over the magnet repair).

  • Run condition:
    • 5mm collimator will be used.
    • The target will remain in gaseous state so that there is no need to man the counting room. Events will come from the solid targets/window on the beam line (1mm CH2 disk on the nose of the ST and 100 μm Al. 2cm downstream of the CH2). If we need a liquid target, we should warn the target group two days in advance (for courtesy. Cooling down the target takes only 5 to 6h). Do we need to install a thicker solid target ?
    • Stand-by shifts from November 30 until December 13. No foreign groups included to limit their travel costs.
    • FDC off (Lubomir P: we should not run the FDC without magnetic field because the high drawn current accelerates the aging of the detector).
    • All other detectors on (required for DAQ and trigger studies). All beamline equipment on except TAC.
    • When accelerator is ready to start its fast feedback commissioning, it needs to be coordinated with solenoid work, which requires the Hall (and thus the tagger) to be open Can all/most of the solenoid work be done in Controlled Access?.


  • list of tasks for the Fall 2015 run:
    • 4 hours for 10 days for Fast-Feedback Studies (Accelerator responsibility: Trent Allison, Brian Bevins). There will be no need to man our counting room. Will they do the 5nA tests?
    • Beam line model test. (Expected time unknown, Accelerator responsibility: Todd Satogata). Is this still in the plan?
    • Tagger detectors commissioning (Hall D responsibility: Richard J. and Alex B.). Detailed plan needed from Richard J. and Alex B.
    • Alex S.needs as much data as possible on the PS and tagger detectors, as well as for trigger studies. Alex claims that for his basics investigation, no having the magnetic field doesn't matter. We will need to have the calorimeters, SC and TOF on during theses studies. (Hall D responsibility: Alex S.). Detailed plan needed from Alex S.
    • Sergey F. needs to have dedicated DAQ time (a couple hours/day) since he did not get enough data in May. (Hall D responsibility: Sergey F.). The goal is to optimize DAQ performance : data rate, trigger rate, live time. Several parameters have to be defined for every DAQ components independently: detectors readout (for FDC,CDC,FCAL,BCAL,...) , event builder, data concentrators, event recorder, to find the slowest. Optimization includes different triggers and beam currents.
    • Lubomir P. and Sergei F. would like to test their transition radiation set-up. It should be parasitic to other Hall D activities, but it may require a specific trigger at some point. (Hall D responsibility: Lubomir P., Sergey F.). Need details from Sergey F. .
    • Calorimeters, ST and TOF will take data (for their sake and because of the trigger/DAQ studies).


  • List of tasks that cannot be done during the Fall 2015 run:
    • Goniometer and polarimeter commissioning.
    • Total Absorption Counter commissioning.

Present:

  • When to start readiness meetings? HCO?.
    • We do not expect to have beam before after Thanksgiving.
    • Before starting operations involving Hall D
  • Run conditions:
    • Target: Cryotarget will not be cooled down. We should install the 10mm disk of CH2 (HDPE, high density polyethylene) on the ST nose. Tim W. has been contacted about this.
    • Hardware and softwares for the fast feedback commissioning are close to be ready. They should be ready for the Fall run with plenty of safetey margin.
    • Can all/most of the solenoid work be done in Controlled Access?
    • Once the FFB commissioning start, there will still be no need to man the counting room until radiators need to be inserted (end of the commissioning involving the Active Collimator). Gain changes for the Active Collimator will be handled by the accelerator. Richard J. and Alex B. to provide Trent A. and Brian B with a procedure.
  • Schedule, list of tasks:
    • We do not expect to have beam until after Thanksgiving.
    • Before starting operations involving Hall D:
      • Hot Checkout update
      • 12 GeV beam must be established.
      • Probably, high current run (100μA) will then occur (beam in Hall A) to test cavity loading.
    • FFB commissioning: The test will start at 1μA, and possibly 3μA. RadCon has been notified. No radiator will be in place but, due to the nature of the commissioning, beam scrapping will occur. ⇒ We must be sure that the Ion Chambers are properly calibrated and their threshold properly set before to start the commissioning. Since the beam will be shut down quickly, no special additional shielding or precautions need to be taken for the tagger electronic.
    • Beam tuning for FFB commissioning will start in the evening. Then a few hours of FFB will follow. The rest of the night will be available for other Hall D commissioning tasks.
    • FFB commissioning will be concluded by low current (5nA) nA-BPM commissioning.
    • Beam line FOPT. About 2h of data. Data for beam energy stability study will be gathered at the same time.
