FDC Update

First weeks of production at Blue Crab:

  1. Problems with HVAC: the control of the AC failed several times due to the same transformer. The cause is not clear, but the transformer will be replaced with one with higher nominal voltage. Lost several days due to high humidity inside the clean room.
  2. The new laser sensor used for wire position and tension measurements, has higher resolution but has problems with the amount of the light reflected from the wires due to different focusing. Had to be replaced with the old one.
  3. After gluing the cathode foils we observed some discoloration at certain sports on the copper. Olga Trofimova found that this is most likely copper chloride that reacts with water (wetting is needed to align the foils on the table) resulting in copper chloride di-hydride. The resistivity doesn't change and it's not reactive, so it's not a stopper for the production. Most likely copper chloride comes from the etching.
  4. Working on two cathodes and hope to finish them by the end of the week, next week we will solder the rigid flexes. Working also on one wire plane; it will be strung by the end of the week.

CDC Update

  1. Status of the construction: Row 19 is complete. Tim reported that the outer shell halves have arrived at JLab, have been cleaned and deburred and will be shipped to CMU in the next few days.
  2. Status of the straws: We have run out of straws. Patrick had emailed that he has the new material and estimated that all being well, he should have the straws ready for shipping soon after May 8.
  3. Hook-up wires: Upon returning to the supplier for the terminators the price had risen dramatically and so we are reverting to an earlier design for the hook-up wires, using a lugged ferrule. Curtis will sent Tim drawings. It might be possible to shrink the PCB slightly and splaying out the connection points would make it easier to work with. About 20% of the hookup wires have been half-made - for one end of each wire we need the O-ring and bushing. Tim said the bushings were ordered around 3 weeks ago.
  4. Preamp: The modified preamp sent by Fernando matches the range of the fADC, we have let Fernando know that this is fine. Gerard just has to finish some tests with it.
