Estimated Budget

Elton showed a detailed table of values for the costs associated with adding a 4th ring to the BCAL.:

  • Total is ~$370k
  • Some discussion was had on possible areas where the cost might be reduced, but no major flaws were observed.
  • Elton noted that the project may ask a the question: What sacrifices might we be willing to make to offset the $370k cost?
    • Elton suggested one possibility is to not outfit the outer layer with readout electronics. This may not hurt us too bad in the forward direction since most of the shower is contained in the inner layers.
      • This would allow everything in the detector to be built with the 1234 scheme and the electronics to be added later with different money.
    • Zisis said we might be better off sticking with the 334 scheme in that scenario
    • David suggested summing sectors in the outer layers to free up digitization electronics there
      • It was remarked that this would not be viable due to the increased of the boards that would require major redesign
  • Matt asked and Elton verified that Fernando did say that while doing a 1234 scheme is doable on the boards, adding a jumper to save the option of setting 1234 or 334 until later was not easy at all due to the density of the board in the are where it would be needed.
    • Beni suggested a summing option on the outer layers may be possible since the board is less dense out there.
  • The Lehman review takes place in October. These means that the project may not give the change request serious thought until that is over.
  • Eugene suggested we try a 244 configuration to compare to the 334 since it is a cost neutral option.
  • He also asked how it would affect the timing resolution if we removed TDCs from the last inner layer
    • David will look into that
