Cart Operation Plan

  • People authorized to perform the following procedures.
Eric Scott

  • Moving the cart from one position to another (Alcove / Platform) requires three people.
  1. Carriage must be moved to the marked transport position and secured in place with at least 2 screw-in stops and the outrigger wheel must be moved to its marked transport position and secured in place.
  2. Outrigger caster locks need to be released so that the wheels are free to swivel.
  3. The cart foot lock (found under the left side of the cart) must be released.
  4. The cart stabilization legs need to be screwed up so they clear the floor by about 1/2".
  5. Two people are necessary to push the cart and one person needs to watch for obstructions while moving it and align it in its new position.
  6. Location specific instructions must be followed (found below).
  • Cart in the platform position
  1. Must have at least 3 people on the platform to move the carriage on top of the cart or push the cart to a new location. Two people will be pushing / pulling while the third watches for hazards.
  2. Ensure that the cart is secured:
    1. The stabilization legs need to be extended and rotated 1/4 turn with a wrench after hand tightening into the floor.
    2. The foot lock (found under the left side of the cart) must be set.
    3. The large wheels need to have the wooden wedges placed on either side of them.
  3. The cart motion system will remain in the power off condition.
  4. When moving the carriage in relation to the cart release the screw-in stops and slide the carriage to the next position then re-secure with at least one stop. To reach the ends of the module it may be necessary to reposition the cart following the above procedure.
  5. Ensure the outrigger is in its "normal" position (second bolt location on the right).
  • Cart in alcove position
  1. Must have at least 3 people on the platform to move the carriage on top of the cart. Two people will be pushing / pulling while the third watches for hazards.
  2. Ensure that the cart is secured:
    1. Bolted the cart to the alignment angles on the floor.
    2. The stabilization legs need to be extended and rotated 1/4 turn with a wrench after hand tightening into the floor.
    3. The foot lock (found under the left side of the cart) must be set.
    4. The large wheels need to have the wooden wedges placed on either side of them.
  3. Slide carriage (This portion must be repeated for each new carriage position):
    1. Loosen locks on outrigger casters.
    2. Loosen Locks on carriage.
    3. One person watches for hazards while two people pull or push the carriage to the desired location.
    4. Tighten at least 2 locks on the carriage.
    5. Use a small jack under the steel plate next to the heavy caster to just lift the casters off the floor so that they can be spun 90 degrees. Leave the locks loose.
  4. Turn on motion system:
    1. Turn on CAMAC Crate.
    2. Turn on motor AC interlock (Button on right side, when engaged a light below the button comes on and motor hums.)
    3. Rotate the carriage by computer (1) of manually (2)
      1. Make sure cart computer is on (Blue light on left of cart).
        1. Login (halldrun@gluex_sc)
        2. Run the Hardware test program (hardware_test), move in small increments and rotate the carriage in the direction you set the casters until they track to the correct angle.
      2. Using the direction switch on the front of the Joerger SMC24B module engage the drive system and rotate the carriage in the direction you set the casters until they track to the correct angle.
    4. Lock the casters at the appropriate angle.
  5. Configure the limits and check for clearance through the entire angular travel before turning system over to remote control.
    1. Update the software limits if necessary by reading out the encoders at the SMC24B limits using (position_read) (cd platform_config or alcove_config depending on location) then edit (encoder_limit_ccw.dat and encoder_limit_cw.dat). The number in ccw is up to 10 less than the readout value while the cw is up to 10 more than the readout value.
    2. Adjust the SMC24B limits if necessary there are 2 switches on right side of cart under the turn table. Only adjust with the AC limit system off (push one of the red buttons).
    3. Adjust the AC limits as necessary on the left side near the back.
    4. Either move the system with the controls on the front of the SMC24B motor control module or log into the computer using the screen and keyboard plugged into the cart computer to test the limit adjustments.
    5. Check the limits under software control one last time before turning the system over for remote operation.
  • Operating cart under remote control
  1. Ensure that cameras are working and a clear view of the cart is possible.
  2. Log into the cart computer (halldrun@gluex_sc), using the BCAL Motion software (BGV_Cart_Motion) tell it the angle you want to move to and log the cart position and watch the encoder value and camera views for anything out of the ordinary. If a problem arises: press Ctrl-C this halts the drive system.
