Documents to Review

  1. Dan's questions: Media:BCAL_questions.doc DAN's stack up dwg

Tentative Agenda

  1. Announcements
  2. Base Plate Latest base plate dwg
    1. Discuss hole/pocket locations, sizes and tolerances
    2. Are drawings final? If yes, expedite prototype base plate construction
    3. O-ring location
  3. Top Plate Latest inner plate dwg
    1. Have it thicker than 8mm and machine it down for leveling?
    2. Features machined after previous step (holes then are not through)
    3. How are the tracking packages mounted inside BCAL mount inside BCAL
  4. Drawings Latest machined wedge dwg
    1. Overall Tolerances, conflicts, stacking of systematic building errors
    2. Danny's/Kevin's questions
    3. Kevin's plans at Ross for 7.5o fixture
  5. Assignment of machining tasks (UofA, Ross Machine Shop)
  6. Detailed schedule for preparation for module production (Gilbert)
  7. Other business
    1. Use DocDB (has version capability) for Drawings uploads; PDF for sure, maybe other formats (engineering, 3D renderings)?

Minutes

Attendees: ...Regina - Zisis, George, Andrei, Dan, Keith, Alberta - Gilbert, Jan, Richard, JLAB - Elke, Elton, Tim

Inner (top)plate

The discussion started with the inner (top) plate and possible machining after layup. It was decided that the layup total thickness tolerance of 1.5 mm would be achievable and acceptable for the installation proces. The variation can be accounted for by shimming the tracking chamber support rail on assy. The plan is to do no machining on top plate for "49th" module.

We will use the inner plates with the rail support holes on the "49th" module. These will be thru holes and will be plugged during layup. Need to add fiber slot in inner plate to hold position while curing final layup.

Base plate

It was decided to drill all the holes in the base plate (except the 4 end holes) prior to layup. No counterbores will be used since it comes uncomfortably close to o-ring groove. The end holes will be machined after facing the ends at Alberta on the NC mill. Gilbert requested 5/16 threaded holes in base plate for holding it to steel support. We will add the to the drawing (8 holes) and get rid of the pins currently on the drawing.

Gilbert and Jan need 3d stp file for NC programming ( Tim to supply)

Need to change width of base plate to 6" (not 5.9.....).

Gilbert requested 3rd alignment pin on edge (now 2). Will change drawing for 2 diamond pins and 1 round pin.

Latest drawings to be put on DOCDB. Actual releaces to be done on JLAB OCE system. Zisis will test drive the system after I get him an account (need JLAB account for starters).

Tim will supply updated drawings and post on DocDB by this friday (or was it next....?) kidding

Wedge Layup

There was a lenghty discussion on controlling the layup thickness. It was decided to monitor the layup carefully after each cure and use lead and glue variations to control stack up height.

Discussed the possibility of tolerance stack up on each wedge causing a step when installing the keystone wedge. This will be handled by adjustments on the installation fixture and monitoring each batch of wedges as they come out of Ross machine shop.

Zisis was inquiring about possible structural epoxies to be used for aluminum plate to lead bonding. Many are available. Need to pick one based on viscosity. Possible vendors are Ciba, Hysol...) Jan to look into this?

Need to remember the modifications to be made to the existing press (pressure gages, etc...)

Wedge Machining and tooling

There were suggestions to use templates for QA of the machined wedges. Details will be worked out as to how to index them. The support beam may need to be machined to allow indexing. (Jan/Gilbert)

Discussed how many support beams needed. Will the wedges be transported with the beams in place? How many are needed? At least 12? This needs to be decided upon.

Ross machine shop has requested a baseplate and support beam to determine their set up. Alberta will supply these.

Gilbert to submit a list of all tools required and cost estimates by middle of next week.

Gilbert will send a drawing of the machining set up for jlab to reference.

Misc

Shipping costs will be reviewed. Zisis waiting on another quote. Will they all be transported in crates? Needs to be determined.

George submitted a QA plan last month. Needs to be reviewed by Tim and Elke.

Pins in the keystone wedge will be installed after the wedge is put in position (via pockets in base plate).

Dan's allocation of who does what from his attached questions document is now our baseline (with the exception that the top plate will not be machined!)
