Minutes

Attending: Christina, George, Pavlos (Athens); Zisis, Andrei (UofR); Will (USM), Elton, Beni, Eugene, John, Jim, Tim, Yi, Chuck, Fernando (JLab)

  1. Announcements
    1. Elton: JLab is rolling out a new phone conferencing system. New access codes and procedures should be updated on communication documents. Presently both new and old systems are active.
  2. Review of Action Items
  3. Agenda for GlueX-Collaboration-Jan-2011
    1. Agenda on the wiki was confirmed. Will should send me several slides about the USM work to include into the Readout talk and Christina and Zisis should send me slides for the monitoring talk.
  4. BCAL Monitoring Update
    1. Zisis updated the group on ongoing discussions between Zisis, Christina and Elton. A summary talk will be given at the collaboration meeting.
    2. The present scheme will have individual LEDs on each light guide connected via electrical cables to a driver board outside the readout enclosure.
    3. Outstanding issue: concern that many LEDs result in many points of failure and we need redundancy. A system is envisioned that will allow sensors on each side of the calorimeter to be seen by both BCAL ends (although with different LED settings).
    4. Calibration will be accomplished with pi0's on a daily basis. The monitoring system will check drifting during this period.
    5. Eugene: Should check with Ashot, which had experience with LED system for PRIMEX.
    6. Need to take a decision over the next couple of months on how to proceed.
    7. John inquired about the length of cable from LED to driver: George: Less than 3 m.
    8. Christina stressed that it is very important to make a decision so that the Athens group can move forward with construction.
  5. USM update (Will)
    1. Entering a phase for definition/closure of the contract for purchase and testing of SiPMs
    2. Beginning contacts with Hamamatsu
    3. Decision to test 32 SiPMs at a time in order to keep pace with Hamamatsu deliveries
    4. The testing box is being expanded from 16 to 32, but is modular and could be enlarged even more.
    5. The testing box is under construction now
    6. Working on version II of the electronic board prototype, which is almost ready to be sent out for fabrication
    7. The latest design has a daughter board mounted on a mother board, as reported in previous meetings, and the daughter board for current measurement is almost ready for fabrication
    8. Progress on issues with customs. Francisco Soto, business manager, has been working with customs issues. It appears that tariffs for these items will be proportional to time spent in Chile at ~<1%/month. The MOU has been useful for this purpose. [Note: there is no problem using the MOU as it is a public document].
    9. Progress on light guides: New diamond polishing bits and specialty bits for plastic cutting have been purchased to see if they can produce an adequate finish. Using the 2 smaller CNC machines, can currently produce 4 guides per day; speed may increase if new specialty bits give better results.
    10. Eugene: Asked how much time it takes to cool down the test setup. Will expected 2-3 hours, but this will be checked either by calculations or empirically, or both.
  6. SiPM update
    1. Regina preparations
      • Preparations are ongoing: following systems are now working: xy scanning table, stand to mount UV LED (as well as laser), laser sending out for repair, fiber with 90Sr source available for Npe measurements
      • Request for some number of light guides from USM. We need to get a specific number for all work at UofR, Athens, and JLab.
    2. First Article testing (Carl and Yi)
      • Carl and Yi have collected all the instrumentation for the tests
      • Working on automating the test setup
      • Still need to order communication and temperature monitoring devices.
  7. Simulations
    • Simulations to check Dan's work on reconstruction using summed cells are getting started. Report at next reaodut meeting.
  8. Electronics/cooling (Fernando)
    1. Electronic summed boards sent to Hamamatsu and 16-cell readout boards for testing will be ready next week. Will send samples to UofR, Chile and keep a couple for the Jlab tests.
    2. Dynamic range estimated is 1:410. Elton suggested aiming for 1:450. Fernando said this might be problematic if noise is at the 5mV level. He suggested a non-linear readout, but shortly after the meeting concluded this may not be suitable for this application.
    3. Beni: suggested splitting the signal (for inner layers) and measuring with two ADCs.
  9. Geometry and light guides
    1. Jim says he has a mechanical concept for cooling to be presented locally this afternoon.
    2. Space for LED readout boards should be checked with the new light guide sizes.
  10. Comments on QC/QA from project (Elton)
    1. Need to release QA documents to Document control.
