FDC Update

  1. Ready for the FDC production review tomorrow (03/31). Almost all the procedures, production drawings, QA and safety documents are ready (not all approved yet).
  2. Another set of cathode panels, the first from the mass production, arrived at JLab. The Allflex company plans to produce 2 sets (cathodes) per week. Allflex are busy with other orders and have to tune their equipment every week for the cathode production. Eugene prefers to have all the cathodes produced at once. However, in this case, we don't have the manpower to inspect all the cathodes. With 2 cathodes/week we have to do full inspection every time to make sure the quality doesn't change due to the interruptions in the production.
  3. For training, our techs exercised the cathode building procedures: cutting, aligning, gluing and tensioning, and it was successful.
  4. Simon will work on electronics calibration. The built-in features in the pre-amps and fADC125 allow to monitor the electronics only. Gerard will make firmware changes so that one can vary the amplitude of the testing pulse and check the linearity of the electronics.

CDC Update

  1. Status of the Construction: The construction team are part-way through installation of row 18. The last box of 220 straws has been started and will be used up in a few weeks time. We have not heard any news of the resistance of the material from Sheldahl. When we know the likely length of the time-gap in the straw supply we will decide whether to start stringing straight tubes or work on the HVB connector wires.
  2. Status of the hook-up wires: The hook-up wires (meaning the assembly with the conductive rubber on one end of the wire and the ferrule and exposed hooked central conductor at the other) which were made with the original sample length of wire were tested for gas-tightness, and after sealing the end of the wire with epoxy, they did not leak. More hook-up wires were made with the new reel of wire and these did leak. They were tested for gas-tightness using Slava's small swiss-cheese prototype chamber filled with ethane, and a flammable gas detector. More wires were made using different grades of epoxy and tested for gas-tightness, and a potting compound was found which did seal the wires so that they passed the leak test.
  3. Coax terminator for PCB End: Trial runs at soldering the HVB end of the hook-up wires proved to be rather tricky and also messy. Some commercially available terminators were found which would make this task much easier and neater. Terminator details The terminators end with one wire loop, when this is snipped it leaves 2 ends which can be pushed through holes in the PCB and soldered in place. This could permit the size of the PCB to be reduced, or the existing size could be used and the wires glued to the PCB for added strength. The terminators are $4.83 each. Terminator order details Curtis asked if JLab would be able to negotiate a better price.
  4. Summer students: We have 2 students lined up for summer work.
  5. New fADC: Naomi is collecting cosmic data at 2030V with 50/50 mixed Ar/CO2. The gain with the new fADC does look slightly higher than that of the old Struck fADC + shaper so she picked 2030V as a compromise between putting the cosmics max amplitude near ch 200 whilst keeping the efficiency high. Histograms will be coming later.
  6. CDC Monthly progress report: Beni reminded us that this is due on Monday.
