Hall D PLC Hardware Review Comments:

1. Advantage : There has been significant work utilizing the Allen-Bradley PLC hardware and software within JLAB and other sister Labs.

2. Advantage: Software drivers and hardware can be utilized from other labs resulting in a proven and reliable system.

3. Advantage: Hall D personnel have utilized existing JLAB experts in software development and hardware implementation.

4. Disadvantage: Changing hardware would require additional research time, software development, training, and integration with a high impact on manpower requirements.

Although cheaper PLC hardware can be purchased, it would require additional software training and an increased learning curve, which I believe would offset the savings in hardware. Therefore, I do not feel there would be a cost savings by switching hardware at this time.

The overall cost of the PLC system was reasonable with potential savings if, multi-year quantities can be integrated into the procurement contract. Of course, that would have to be worked out with the vendor.

In summary, it is my opinion that the Hall D PLC system is well balanced by utilizing proven technology that is supported by JLAB and other sister LABS. Changing direction at this time would not result in significant project savings.
