Abstract:
This document explores some issues related to employing the GlueX
Forward Drift Chambers (FDCs) as a system for charged particle
identification. The primary method considered here is to measure
the specific ionization (dE/dX) to separate charged hadrons (pions,
kaons, and protons) by utilizing the fact that different particles
can be identified in a drift chamber because of the special
relationship between dE/dX and $\beta \gamma$ (the relativistic
generalization of velocity) or between dE/dX and momentum $P$.
