General Information
This document describes the run plan for the Hall D Spring 2025 run.
- Schedule for the run (see 2025 official schedule (draft)):
- February or March TBD: Electron beam restoration.
- January 24th - July 20th: 26 weeks for upgraded ECal commissioning and GlueX-II/JEF. As of 01/14/25, a 5 to 7 weeks shift is expected ⇒ March. 1st - Aug. 24th:
- Accelerator overall plan and priorities: Deliver physics beam to 4 halls
- Hall D plan summary:
- Beam and detector check-out: 50 - 300 nA. ~ a day.
- Commission new beam profiler from Regina (Hovanes).
- Commission of ECal (~ a month. 150 nA)
- Opportunistic tests during possible pauses of ECAL Commissioning:
- Diamond alignment (Hovanes, see below)
- CDC HV scans (Beni, Naomi). Need compatible trigger
- ToF HV scans (Beni). Need compatible trigger
- Lead glass HV scans (Malte). Need compatible trigger
- Study thick 80μm new diamond (Richard).
- Others?
- Opportunistic tests during possible pauses of ECAL Commissioning:
- Commissioning of FCal (In parallel with ECal. Needs a commissioning plan.)
- Diamond alignment: Stable beam (no frequent trip) 20 nA without FSD for 2-3 shifts.
- Experiment: GlueX-II/JEF E12-12-002
- 2 TAC runs. ~nA or less. The bleedthrough should be small compare to it. 1 run just after ECAL Commissioning. Another near the end of the run.
- Ideally, TAC run should be done with the other Halls off.
- If not possible, the next best option is to have both A and C not at 5 passes, so that magnetic extraction is performed (less bleedthrough than with RF separation).
- Either Hall A or C or both are at 5 passes during the whole run ⇒ we will have to watch for opportunity when the Hall at 5 passes is down.
- High luminosity runs: up to 1 week at 650nA, and up to 1 day at 1 uA.
- 2 empty target runs (300 nA). 1 run at the start of GlueX-II data taking. Another near the end of the run.
- Straight track run: 2 shifts (50% efficiency: one shift of good data) (50 nA on 10-4 R.L. radiator).
- Opportunistic tests:
- GEM-TRD test during ECAL Commissioning Positioned 3 to 6 o'clock in front of forward detectors, looking downstream.

Readiness for Spring 2025 run
- Solenoid (Tim/Eugene/Beni/Scott):
- Solenoid is cold, full with LHe and tested to 825A. Waiting to be closer to the start of the run (when the Hall is in Controlled Access) to test it to full current. Check-out done as far as it can be.
- Surveys (Tim/Scott)
- Surveys yet to be finalized or TBD:
ToF done- Need to redo the goniometer survey after we install two 80 μm diamonds. (Next week)
- PS may need to be redone.
DIRC. Done on 01/14Dark cover being installed today (01/15)- Beam pipe
GEM Done on 01/09- Luminosity monitor
Target and Start Counter. Done
- Surveys yet to be finalized or TBD:
- DAQ (Sergei).
Every component of the DAQ are tested and working individually.Beam helicity module has been inserted.- Need to test RCDB.
- New version of CODA available: Will need to be tested (Sacha).
- Trigger (Alex Somov).
- Initial implementation of the VTP firmware. All 6 VTPs now installed in VXS crates of ECal and configured. Started testing the trigger. All individual crates are generating triggers. Now, need to test how the operate together. May be able to start testing next week with cosmics. It will then need to be integrated in DAQ (old and new version of CODA).
- Beam line
- Diamond status (Tim/Hovanes).
- Two thick 80μm new diamonds (JD80-212, JD80-213) have been now glued and sent to JLab. The were received and will be install this week (Jan 13-17).
- Need to remove spent diamond JD70-105 for anneal tests at U.Conn. Next week (Jan 20-24).
- Richard is glueing new 80μm diamonds (which ones?) to their holders. They will be sent soon to JLab.
- Putting new diamond and/or removing mounted diamond ⇒ re-surveying the goniometer. (Presumably, after mid-January.)
Tagger magnet- Ready and NMR is working.
- Diamond status (Tim/Hovanes).
- Tagger hodoscope (A. Somov).
- TBD
- Tagger microscope (R. Jones/Igal).
- TBD
- Goniometer (Hovanes).
- Removed from beamline and reinstalled ⇒ all diamond alignments will need to be redone.
Collimator Motion (Hovanes).- tested and working
- New profiler (Regina): All tests are fine and surveyed,
- Tested with Cosmics. There is a couple of dead channels. Fernando and Chris will look into fixing one of them (we can live without the other channel).
- Detector is operational, Voltages were applied and signals observed. M. Dugger had planned to come on Jan 24-26 to do a complete checkout but this may be a problem because LO/TO is needed and cannot be easilly done on week-end. Tim, Scot, Beni and M. Dugger are looking into a solution. (The ePAS is ready.)
Surveyed and ready.
- Assembled, tested and surveyed. Will be cabled on Jan. 16 or 17.
- Lots of work to be done. Need ECal hardware (temperature sensor, High Voltage equipment) to be finalized before to start Slow Control work on it. Need also to do some test with DIRC. Justin: it is ready for these tests.
- Need to wait for the cables to be reconnected, which can be done only after the DIRC is placed in position and surveyed (this should be done by now).
- Start Counter (Simon/Joerg/Beni)
- Operational, everything look good.
- FDC (Lubomir).
- Chiller is now operational.
The issue with its interlock (rather, the communication box) is gone. - Of the two flash-ADC that were not communicating, one is now fixed and for the other it will be replaced by one borrowed from the TRD.
- Looking at cosmic data.
- Chiller is now operational.
- CDC (Naomi/Lubomir/Beni).
- Earlier assessment of readiness were done too long ago (December). It will be good to recheck readiness. Will take more cosmics data.
- One channel has a bit missing. May need to borrow a fADC module from the TRD.
- Gas system (Beni/Lubomir)
- Looking good.
- BCal (Mark Dalton/Malte)
- Detector appears functional. Ready to start the HCO. Need 3 periods of 4h when DAQ is available. Mark is coordinating this with Sasha.
- ECal (Sasha)
- Ecal was powered-up during Xmas break and a large sample of cosmic data were taken. They look good and all channels are working. Next step is to equalize gains and start calibration. Once realistic HV are implemented, Sasha will start taking cosmics data.
- ECal temperature:
- Installed 3 temperature sensors. ECal temperatures are now in the monitoring and interlock systems.
- There is a significant temperature rise when the High Voltage are turned on. The ECal crystals are very temperature-sensitive, so this may impact the ECal calibration.
- To minimize the temperature issue, Sacha will try to increase/add air flow from cooling fans. Cooling of the beam pipe is another possibility.
- Need to check about 5-7 channels (includes 2 with loose connections, which will be fixed today, 01/14) that have unexpected signal shapes than expected, probably because of loose divider socket connections. Fixing them is difficult because of there are many other cables in the way and fixing one may loosen others.
- Got the new trigger firmware and started tested it. Looks good so far but there are still tests to be performed.
- FCal (Malte/Mark Dalton)
- Running it now with LED and cosmics. Cosmics data taking started mid-December.
- Analyzing the cosmic data to determine the optimal HV settings. It is a lengthy process but a procedure has been devised.
- Found that between 30 and 50 channels were malfunctioning. Many can probably be fixed by a base change. Most of them are now fixed, but small issue are remaining and being fixed.
- ToF (Simon/Beni).
- Installed: requires re-shimming to match the new ECAL/FCAL
- The channel that did not count is now fixed. All channels are now good.
- Beni is in the process of calibrating the TDC chips (calibration data taking takes a long time, ~week).
- DIRC (Justin).
- LED system is now fixed. Test with LED started. Will do a new round of LED test once the dark cover is put back.
- Support from Electronic Group (Eugene)
- We will have a phone number for on-call contact. (Mark Dalton ordered a phone. Still waiting for it to be delivered.)
- Ed Folt found a few items that needed to be updated in the new RSAD and ESAD for 2025. Beni has now done the update (01/15/2025). The new document will be sent again to Ed for review.
- ESAD and RSAD are ready and available at the Hall D safety page.
- Need run certificate from Patricia.
- tested and working
Live Camera Feeds from the Four Counting Houses
- These feeds SHOULD be open and visible at all times from one of the monitors in each of the counting houses.
- Management cautions AGAINST opening them from other locations or offsite, out of concern for available bandwidth.
- Beni will contact Walt Akers to inquire about their status. Done. Walt will take care of it.
